Three Gowanda residents tried to cash stolen checks Tuesday at Marine Midland Bank's Town of Evans branch on Erie Road, Evans police said.

"The bank clerk became suspicious of the checks they tried to pass, and she took their driver licenses, and another clerk called the police," Lt. Samuel DeJohn said. "The three grabbed the checks and fled, but our police car was there within 45 seconds."

Tyrone Walthour, 32; Craig T. Border, 19; and Larry L. McCubbin, 21, were all charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument. Officers David Burke and Dan Hontz were credited with making the arrests.

"When we inventoried their car, we found numerous stolen checkbooks, all from the Gowanda area, and some of the checks were filled out in Tyrone Walthour's name ready to go," DeJohn said.

Unable to post $1,000 bail, Walthour, who is on parole from state prison, remained in the Erie County Holding Center, police said. The other two were released without bail.
