WILLIAM R. DAMIANO, SEMIPRO FOOTBALL PLAYER

William R. Damiano, formerly of Niagara Falls, died Saturday (July 26, 1997) in his Boca Raton, Fla., home. He was 72.

Damiano lived in Boca Raton since 1978.

Born in Niagara Falls, Damiano was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He played semiprofessional football in Ontario for the Hamilton Tigers, a predecessor to the Hamilton Tigercats of the Canadian Football League.

Damiano held many jobs in the Niagara Falls area. He worked as a truck driver for the Power Project in Lewiston, delivered clothes for Manhattan Cleaners and also was a firefighter and mail carrier. He also was a beer salesman for Certo Brothers, sold Ford cars for the former Whitworth Motors, operated his own clothing store on Pine Avenue during the 1960s and worked as an inspector for Bell Aircraft Co. in Wheatfield.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, the former Irene Mantell.

Survivors also include two daughters, Doreen Figler of Syracuse and Cindy Walker; two brothers, John of Niagara Falls and Thomas of Sarasota, Fla.; two sisters, Antoinette Giancola and Josephine Cimino; and two grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m., Aug. 18 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1413 Pine Ave. Services and entombment were held today in Boca Raton.
