I applaud Donn Esmonde for his column on the key role master planning should play in the futures of our communities -- "Hamburg charts its future before the developers do."
As the consultant responsible for guiding the Town of Hamburg Master Plan document, I can attest to the town's extraordinary and exemplary commitment to making the planning process work for all aspects of the community. Hamburg's Master Plan is shared by virtually everyone -- from citizens groups to business interests.
Good planning is not easy. It requires leaders to embrace all the interests of diverse groups of people and to satisfy the demands of a growing community. But ultimately, the planning function gives communities the ability to control and direct growth in ways that are fiscally, environmentally and culturally responsible.
