The State University at Stony Brook is making a bid to run Brookhaven National Laboratory.
University President Shirley Strum-Kenny announced Monday that the university is teaming up with an Ohio research facility, with the goal of operating the lab. She said Battelle Memorial Institute of Columbus is experienced in environmental safety and cleanup, the prime concerns of the Brookhaven laboratory.
The U.S. Department of Energy fired the management team running the lab for failing to notify the public that radioactive water had leaked into the ground over the past year.
Competition is expected from other research foundations and universities.
