The FBI is working with local law enforcement officials in an attempt to capture a man wanted on extortion charges.
Officials said several citizens in the Western New York area have been victim to an extortion plot carried out by a suspect described as a white male in his late 30s, approximately 6 feet tall, of average weight and balding.
A security camera at one delivery site captured the image of the man while he was making a pickup of extorted cash at an undisclosed Niagara County drop site.
Persons living in northwestern Erie and Niagara counties have received letters through the mail demanding large sums of cash with threats of "severe consequences" to them and their families if the cash was not delivered on time.
The letters also included a warning not to notify police.
Federal authorities are keeping their investigation quiet so that not too much information has been released, but sources say they believe there is more than one person involved in the extortion plot and that the demands, using block letters, have been mailed to victims since last October.
