A helmet may have saved a 13-year-old Grand Island youth who was struck by a car Monday morning while riding his bicycle on Stony Point Road.
R.J. Krause, 13, of Sandy Beach Road was treated and released from Children's Hospital following the accident shortly after 9 a.m.
The Erie County Sheriff's Department said the boy, traveling south on Stony Point Road, moved unsafely to the left and in front of a southbound car driven by Elizabeth Leitner, 41, of East River Road, Grand Island. She was not charged.
The collision sent the boy's bike helmet through the car's windshield.
"If he had not had his helmet on, he would have had a serious or critical head injury," Sgt. Gary Horton said.
