CANADA TO IMPOSE SANCTIONS ON BURMA

Conceding that friendly diplomacy to promote democratic reform in Burma has failed, Canada said today it would impose economic sanctions against Rangoon's military government.

The sanctions under consideration include an investment ban as well as trade curbs, including higher tariffs, Canadian officials said.

The announcement came after Burmese Foreign Minister Ohn Gyaw had been "unambiguously unresponsive" to requests from his Canadian counterpart for some evidence of progress toward democracy, the officials said.

Canada's announcement is a victory for the United States, which has been seeking international support for efforts to isolate Burma.
