Jim Brenner averaged 257 for his first eight games to take the early lead in the opening round of the PBA Showboat Senior Invitational in Las Vegas. Brenner, who owns an unusually high 180-pin lead over Dave Frame, highlighted his round with a near-perfect 298. Brenner, a two-time Senior Tour champion, also recorded scores of 227, 269, 248, 259, 263, 257 and 235 for a total of 2,056 pins. The top five will compete in Friday night's stepladder finals with the top prize being $20,000.

The WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs fired coach Mary Murphy, replacing her with assistant coach Heidi VanDerveer. Murphy also held the title of general manager for the WNBA team.

Defending champion Wayne Ferreira beat Daniel Vacek, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, in a rain-delayed opening-round match at the du Maurier Canadian Open in Montreal.
