An 18-year-old Kaisertown man was fatally shot in the back early today when an argument between two other people led to shots being fired into the Ford Bronco in which the victim was sitting.
Mark Kosmoski, 18, of South Pierce Street died at 3:32 a.m. in Erie County Medical Center after being shot on Edison Street in the city's Kensington-Bailey area. Police said the victim apparently was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Homicide detectives were questioning a possible suspect late this morning, but it was unclear whether he would be charged. Detectives also were conferring with the Erie County district attorney's office.
The victim's friends told police they were going to drop off one of their friends who lived in the area.
While the group headed down Edison, one of the passengers apparently got into an argument with a young man on the street. The passenger got out of the Bronco for a brief period, then jumped back into the vehicle, as the other young man fired several shots from his pistol.
"One of the shots went through a back window and struck the victim in the back," Lt. William Conwall said.
Kosmoski, who was riding with five friends, was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle when he was shot. His friends drove him to nearby Erie County Medical Center, where officials called police at 2:52 a.m. Kosmoski died 40 minutes later.
