TEEN INJURED AFTER PASSING OUT BENEATH TRUCK

A freak accident in the parking lot at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds Saturday left a Cassadaga teen-ager badly injured and another facing charges including driving while intoxicated.

Chautauqua County sheriff's officers said Jenine Kumpf, 17, of Route 60, Cassadaga, reportedly passed out beneath the bed of a full-sized pickup truck.

The driver, Robert J. Austin, 19, of 8249 Meadowlark Road, Cassadaga, did not know the girl was there and started backing out of his parking space. But deputies said he heard someone screaming and stopped.

Austin took Ms. Kumpf to a friend's house in Cassadaga, where they learned the girl had been seriously hurt, deputies said. A Cassadaga rescue unit was summoned, and Ms. Kumpf was taken to Brooks Memorial Hospital.

Doctors in Dunkirk determined the girl suffered several skull fractures but described them as not life-threatening. She was transferred to Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo, where she is listed in fair condition.

The incident occurred at about 3:30 a.m., but officers needed several hours to investigate.

Austin was charged with driving while intoxicated, unsafe backing and leaving the scene of a personal-injury auto accident. He will appear in Dunkirk City Court later.
