The Olean City Democratic Committee has endorsed Charlotte McLaughlin for the party's nomination for mayor in the Sept. 9 primary.
Mrs. McLaughlin was selected over David Anastasia by a vote of 15 to 0. Both Cattaraugus County legislators are seeking the party's backing after Mayor John Ash said he would not seek another four-year term.
"It's an honor to be endorsed by the party I have worked so hard to support for more than 30 years," said Mrs. McLaughlin, a legislator since 1991 now serving as minority leader.
She also has been endorsed by the Conservative and Independence parties.
Anastasia noted that the Democratic City Committee has 26 members, and of the 15 members voting, Mrs. McLaughlin held seven proxies.
"I don't see how eight people could consider making an endorsement," Anastasia said. "I'm not really disappointed, just surprised. The real endorsement will be made by the Democrats of the City of Olean when they vote Sept. 9."
Anastasia, who has been endorsed by the Right to Life Party, called the endorsement of Mrs. McLaughlin "just another political maneuver."
