34TH CORN FEST GETS UNDER WAY THURSDAY

They're getting the pots ready to boil thousands of ears of corn this weekend in Eden.

The 34th annual Eden Corn Festival starts Thursday with the Eden Boys' Minor Division All-star game at 4 p.m. and the opening of the midway at 5 p.m.

In addition to the popular corn-eating constests, festival queen pageant, parade and auto show, the four-day festival will sport fireworks at 10:30 p.m. Saturday on the grounds just off Route 62 near the Eden Elementary School.

"It's a good, fun, family event. It's a pretty inexpensive event. There is no admission, and parking is $3," said spokesman Gary Eye.

Eye noted there are various satellite parking lots and areas, and one can find parking for free "if you don't mind walking."

While this year's growing season is a little behind, Eye said there is plenty of corn in Eden.

"Everything should be hitting its peak at that time," he said.

Thursday's events include a pet show and a chicken barbecue at 5 p.m. and a 4-H dog show handling and drill team judging at 6 p.m. Suzanne's School of Dance performs at 7 p.m. and Ken Redding's Band takes the stage at 9 p.m.

The midway opens at 1 p.m. Friday. The Evans Pacesetters Dog Obedience Show will take place at 4:30 p.m. and the chicken barbecue starts at 5 p.m. The evening's entertainment includes line dancers at 6:30 p.m., Buffalo and Brandy at 7 p.m. and Jay Moran's Big Band at 9 p.m.

The children's art show and a craft show open at 11 a.m. Saturday. The chicken barbecue starts at noon and the midway opens at 1 p.m. The children's corn eating contest starts at 1 p.m. and the adult corn eating contest begins at 4 p.m. The Barroom Buzzards take the stage at 7 p.m. and the corn queen pageant starts at 8 p.m.

The parade starts down Route 62 (Main Street) at noon Sunday. Also at noon, the auto show opens in front of the school and the midway and chicken barbecue start operating. Down Home Cloggers will perform at 3:30 p.m., Erie County Fair's Spirit of Youth will entertain at 6:30 p.m. and the Country Jamboree starts at 8 p.m. at the stage.

Various Little League and fast pitch softball championship games take place throughout the entire festival.
