THERE WILL BE A QUIZ

Local sports commentators (including Mike Harrington of The News and Van Miller of the Bills' broadcasts), please note: A crowd at a sports event cannot "reach a crescendo," no matter how many home runs Jeff Manto hits, or how many touchdowns the Bills score.

A crescendo (from the Latin crescere, to grow) is defined by Webster's as "a gradual swelling tone." You can reach a climax, a zenith, a peak, a summit, and, if you are French, a denouement; but you cannot "reach" a crescendo. It is the crescendo that helps you reach the climax.
