Stephen J. Navis, 76, of Chapin Avenue, a longtime DuPont employee, died Saturday (July 26, 1997) in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.
Born in Butler, Pa., he moved to Niagara Falls as a young child.
During World War II, he was a sergeant in the Army's 820th bombardment squadron, serving in the air offensive against Japan and in the western Pacific.
Navis worked for E.I. DuPont De Nemours & Co. for 40 years in the transportation department and for several years in transportation for Gross Plumbing Co. He retired in 1982.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, American Legion Portage Post 1465, Echo Club, LaSalle Sportsmen's Club, DuPont Retirees 25-Year Club, Franklinville Conservation Club and Lime Lake Association.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling.
He is survived by his wife, the former Julie J. Jakubek; a son, James S.; two sisters, Julie Wackett of Binghamton and Rose Golanka; a brother, Thaddeus T. "Ted" Niewisiewicz; and two grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, 2437 Niagara St., after prayers at 9 in the Zajac Funeral Home, 319 24th St. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Lewiston.
