The recent highly publicized troubles between House Speaker Newt Gingrich and other House Republican leaders have tarnished the Republican Party's image, according to a Newsweek poll released Saturday.

According to the poll -- taken for the Aug. 4 issue -- 69 percent of Americans think the squabbling has either hurt the chances of congressional Republicans to shape important legislation or diminished the party's chances of retaining control of Congress.

Forty-eight percent said they believed congressional Republican leaders have hurt themselves both ways, according to the poll.

The poll also found that 49 percent of Americans believe the Senate campaign finance hearings have produced important information about wrongdoings by both the Democrats and Republicans.
