Athletic events, a computer challenge, scholarship bowl competition and community service projects at selected sites are among the events planned for this week's National Police Athletic League Youth Festival that is expected to attract more than 500 students from several states.

Participants are expected to begin arriving Monday for the first such festival sponsored by the National Association of Police Athletic Leagues and coordinated by the Niagara Police Athletic League.

Visiting athletes will stay at Niagara University in Lewiston, where most of the events will take place. Some baseball games will be played at Sal Maglie Stadium or North AmeriCare Park in Buffalo.

All track events will be held at Lewiston-Porter Central School, Lewiston.

Events are scheduled daily through Saturday, with a parade of athletes set for 8 a.m. Friday in Sal Maglie Stadium in Hyde Park.

Arthur Eberhart is executive director of the local Police Athletic League. Honorary co-chairmen of the festival are the Rev. Paul Golden, president of Niagara University, and Alan Elia, vice president of Sevenson Environmental Services in Niagara Falls.
