The Orleans County Legislature wants to improve the conveniences for Barge Canal recreational boaters and prospects for business establishments around its four canal ports. It has authorized Planning Director Wayne Hale to apply for a $67,000 portion of a $450,000 state canal fund for projects at the four ports.
Hale said installing a pump-out facility and fenders for mooring is planned for Knowlesville and sidewalks are planned around the Medina port. The specific projects for the Albion and Holley ports are being framed.
Hale said that the Barge Canal this year is having good recreational traffic. "The other day, I saw two out-of-state sailboats motoring through the canal," he said.
