I believe that the Town of Amherst is being unreasonable in its demand that residents install sidewalks -- but not for the reasons given by most people. The sidewalks would be a waste of money because they would get little use.
We have sidewalks in my neighborhood. Yet in the past few weeks, I have often observed people walking, running, roller skating, walking dogs and pushing baby strollers in the street.
Perhaps pedestrians should be penalized for using the streets, except when necessary, just as motorists would be for driving on the sidewalks. Pedestrians do not have licenses, of course, but maybe they should have their Nikes impounded.
