A career prosecutor and University at Buffalo graduate has been named to the federal bench to fill a new magistrate's position created to reduce a backlog of court cases.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Gary Sharpe said Wednesday he expects to take the bench Oct. 1. He was selected by the federal judges in the Northern District of New York.
Sharpe, 50, of Vestal, served as U.S. attorney for the 32-county district from 1992 to 1994 before being replaced by Thomas Maroney.
As an assistant prosecutor, Sharpe has headed the Binghamton office since 1994. He previously worked for the state attorney general's office and the Broome County district attorney's office.
Sharpe served in the Army and Navy. He graduated from UB and Cornell University's law school.
