Matrx Medical Inc., an Orchard Park manufacturer and distributor of medical equipment, is now completely owned by MDS Inc. of Canada. MDS previously held an 80 percent stake in Matrx.
The acquisition of the rest of Matrx from management began in February 1996 and was finalized only recently. As a result, the name of the firm has been changed to MDS Matrx. Matrx had been a subsidiary of MDS since 1990.
The company will keep its headquarters and specially certified manufacturing operations in Orchard Park, where 96 of its 160 employees work.
MDS Matrx is the largest manufacturer and distributor of per-hospital and emergency medical equipment in the country, according to the company. It had sales of $28 million last year.
Matrx managers sold their 20 percent share of the company to MDS because they viewed the firm as an "ideal partner," according to Daniel Horrigan, president and chief executive officer of Matrx.
Horrigan sees the completed acquisition of Matrx by MDS as a vote of confidence in the Orchard Park company and its products. He also said the move by MDS is "part of their long-term plans to expand into the U.S."
Among the company's newest innovations is the DryMax Vacuum System, which will offer increased, adjustable suction power for dental professionals.
MDS, which had total revenues of $800 million in 1996, is Canada's largest technology-based health and life sciences firm, said a spokesman for MDS Matrx.
