Tom Brokaw has signed a five-year contract to continue as anchor of the "NBC Nightly News" after being briefly pursued by CNN.

NBC announced the signing Thursday but wouldn't disclose terms of the contract, which replaces one that was due to expire Aug. 30. TV Guide said earlier this week that the contract would pay him $7 million a year.

Along with his role on the nightly news, Brokaw will contribute to "Dateline NBC" and periodically anchor programs on the all-news cable network, MSNBC, NBC said.
