GUARD FINDS NEWBORN OUTSIDE BROOKLYN HOSPITAL

A security guard found a crying newborn boy wrapped in a garbage bag outside the doors of a Brooklyn hospital early Thursday, police and hospital officials said.

A guard at St. Mary's Hospital in Crown Heights heard the cries at 3:30 a.m. and discovered the infant next to a garbage can outside the emergency room entrance, said Daphne Lawrence, a hospital spokeswoman.

Police said the baby was found in a plastic garbage bag with his umbilical cord still attached.

The full-term infant weighs 6 pounds, 3 ounces and was in stable condition at the hospital today, Ms. Lawrence said.
