BUDDY BUDDY VIEWERS GET CHUMMY WITH 'NOTHING TO LOSE'

COMMENT

There's a new movie on top of our poll this week, and it's quite a surprise. The buddy comedy "Nothing to Lose" stars Tim Robbins as a successful ad exec who adores his wife and work. Arriving home early one day, he discovers his wife (Kelly Preston) and boss (Michael McKean) in bed together. Destroyed and suicidal, he drives aimlessly through the bad part of town, where the unfortunate Martin Lawrence targets him for robbery. Big mistake: Lawrence has picked the wrong guy on the wrong day. The tables are turned, but the two bond with each other and team up to wind their way through an extremely unprofessional crime spree.

Moviegoers raved: "Absolutely the funniest movie I've seen this year. It made me feel good, too," "(Lawrence) swears too much, but maybe that's part of why he's funny" and "Warm and funny at the same time. I'm really surprised how much I liked this film." (News Staff Reviewer Rafer Guzman called it "subpar" and said "it offers subtle racism instead of actual jokes. . . . There's nothing here to laugh at but Lawrence's blackness -- and that's not funny." He gave the film 2 stars out of 5.)

NEW RELEASES

"George of the Jungle": Brendan Fraser plays the clumsy would-be Tarzan in this parody of the former cartoon hero. Moviegoers were adamant in their fondness for the film's humor and animals. Viewers said: "How do they get the animals to seem so natural and funny?," "The animals were fantastic" and "It was a lot better than I would have guessed, but that's Disney for you." (News Staff Reviewer Melinda Miller called it "a feel-good, funny, romantic and swinging movie" and promised "a vine time will be had by all." She gave the film 4 stars.)

"Operation Condor": Jackie Chan, the king of kung foolery, is simultaneously Mikhail Baryshnikov and Jerry Lewis in this movie. Audiences commented: "Fast action," "It's amazing that he does all those things himself" and "I think this is his best." (Melinda Miller: "We, like his three female companions, can only marvel. It's choppily edited, awkwardly dubbed and wonderful fun." She gave the film -- which Chan himself directed -- 3 stars.)
