AROUND & ABOUT

Anne Marie Duggan defeated Carlyn Dorin-Ballard, 234-215, to win the LPBT's $65,000 Berkeley Invitational in Goose Creek, S.C.

Fifth-seeded Liz Johnson of Niagara Falls won the first match of the finals by defeating Jackie Mitskavich, 199-167, then Duggan began her march to the title with a 216-201 win over Johnson.

Fifth-seeded Gary Mage, who lost last week's title match against Earl Anthony, rebounded with four stepladder victories to win the PBA's Boise Senior Open.

Mage had games of 258, 245 and 205 before defeating Pete Couture, 225-194 to earn the $8,000 first prize.

Mario Traversoni was awarded the victory in today's 19th stage of the Tour de France after still another controversy marred the closing sprint. Jan Ullrich of Germany remained the overall leader.

The first two finishers, Bart Voskamp of Netherlands and Jan Heppner of Germany, were disqualified for interference. Voskamp went off line to force Heppner to the side. Then, Heppner then moved into Voskamp and nearly fell. Traversoni finished third, but was later declared the winner.

Michael Carbajal, badly bloodied in his loss a week ago, called it quits as a boxer after a decade during which he held three major titles. "It's over," said Carbajal (45-4, 30 knockouts), who traced his decision to what he saw when he watched a videotape of his defeat to South African Jake Matlala in Las Vegas. "I looked slow, said Carbajal, who turns 30 Sept. 17. "The speed just wasn't there anymore.
