PENDLETON -- Two men were injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident at 8 p.m. Wednesday near old railroad tracks in a field off Aiken Road, Sheriff's Deputy Steven Preisch said.
Raymond Krehan, 37, of Beach Ridge Road, was listed in good condition in the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo with a head injury, and Michael Marshall, 27, of Aiken Road, was in Lockport Memorial Hospital with a possible head
injury, officials said.
The accident occurred when the two men, who had been drinking, were riding an ATV on some rough terrain, lost control of the vehicle and were ejected from it, Preisch said. Preisch said he could not determine who was driving.
Cummings is granted tenure
SANBORN -- The Niagara-Wheatfield School Board granted tenure Wednesday to an elementary school principal who was recently replaced at that job. After a more than two-hour closed-door session, the board gave Kathleen Cummings tenure as elementary school principal effective Wednesday. She was replaced this month at Colonial Village School when former School Superintendent Carol Beebe returned to her old job as principal of that school for 1997-98.
Ms. Cummings was appointed principal when Mrs. Beebe was hired as superintendent in 1994. Mrs. Beebe stepped down last year from the district's top post. As part of that agreement, she was granted tenure as a principal and was to be assigned to an elementary school.
Virginia executes murderer
JARRATT, Va. -- Joseph Roger O'Dell III -- despite pleas from Pope John Paul II and the Italian government who strongly oppose capital punishment -- was executed by lethal injection Wednesday night for the 1985 rape and murder of Helen Schartner after his last appeal was denied.
The execution came a few hours after he married a law student, who had championed his cause.
