The Town of Amherst wants "sidewalksinstalled in front of every property within a mile of every public school in Amherst." A good start for the town would be to make sure there are sidewalks in front of the schools!
Neither Heritage Heights Elementary School nor Sweet Home Senior High School, both located on Sweet Home Road, has sidewalks directly in front of the school. I realize most of the children attending the elementary school get bused, but does that relieve the town of its duty to provide a safe walking area for children?
We have young children but cannot ride our bikes to the Amherst Bike Path -- which is only minutes from our house -- because we would have to ride in the street on busy Sweet Home Road. Instead we have to drive there.
I also am concerned that when our children attend the Senior High School, they will never be able to walk to the school for any events because of the lack of sidewalks. I think school properties should be at the top of the list for sidewalks, and then work from there.
