Carolyn Dorin-Ballard led the qualifiers for tonight's stepladder finals of the $65,000 LPBT Berkeley Invitational in Goose Creek, S.C. Dorin-Ballard had a 20-11-1 match play record and 10,221 total pins, 61 pins ahead of runner-up Dede Davidson, who had a 20-12 record.

Liz Johnson of Niagara Falls earned the fifth and final spot in the finals with a 20-12 record and 10,090 pins.

Pete Couture expanded his lead to 213 pins after the fourth round of the PBA's Showboat-Boise (Idaho) Senior Open.

Couture knocked down 8,106 pins for the lead.

Ron Winger had a tournament-best 12-4 record to secure second place with 7,893 pins. First-round leader Dick Baker slipped from second to third with 7,861 pins.

The inaugural Indy Racing League event at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., got off to a soggy start as rain and flooding forced the postponement of qualifying for the VisionAire 500.

Olympic organizer Thomas Welch faces a charge of domestic battery and a possible challenge to his 2002 Winter Games leadership upon his return to Utah from an African safari.

Welch, president and chief executive officer of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, is expected to return Friday.

Welch was contacted in Africa, informing him of the misdemeanor battery charge. Welch faces up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $5,000 if convicted.
