FIRE IN PARIS DAMAGES PALACE HOUSING MUSEUMS

Fire tore through a popular Paris monument near the Eiffel Tower, damaging two museums before being extinguished this morning.

The fire broke out late Tuesday night at the Chaillot Palace and burned for three hours. The white stone palace, just across the Seine River from the Eiffel Tower, houses several museums.

The roof was heavily damaged. Two museums -- the Museum of Cinema and the Museum of Monuments -- also had fire and water damage.

But Guy Cogeval, director of the Museum of Monuments, said the damage to the palace was "relatively limited."
