GROUP CAMPAIGNS FOR BILL REQUIRING STANDARD WAGES

The Living Wage Campaign, a coalition of religious, labor and community groups and activists, kicked off the public phase of its efforts to standardize working families' minimum wages today on the steps of City Hall.

The group seeks legislation requiring companies with city contracts to pay their employees at least the amount required to keep a family of four above the federal poverty level, currently at $15,569 a year -- a 40-hour work week at $7.49 per hour.

Group spokesman Jim Mang said the group will continue its petition drive through Labor Day, and a Common Council supporting resolution has been filed.
