Fire that broke out on a convenience-store shelf early Monday caused an estimated $100,000 to $125,000 damage at the Sugar Creek Store on Olean Road in South Wales, fire officials said.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but investigators have not ruled out arson.
About 65 volunteer firefighters from South Wales, East Aurora and Holland responded to a 1:22 a.m. alarm at the store, South Wales Fire Chief Paul R. Rose said.
The cashier was in the cooler and noticed the flames coming from a shelf. "She shut the gas pumps off, left the building and dialed 911," Rose said.
Firefighters had the blaze under control within 15 minutes, but the flames, smoke and heat left heavy damage both to the contents and the building, the fire chief said.
