DEMOCRATS WILL HAVE FULL SLATE

Democrats in Jamestown will have a full slate of candidates for this fall's City Council races, while Republicans have been unable to fill three of the nine spots.

Democratic Chairman Ray Hall on Monday said his committee has endorsed Vince Joy Jr. to run for the Ward I seat being vacated by Democrat Deborah Smith, who is not seeking re-election. The panel also tapped Brian Melquist to run for the Ward 4 seat against Republican incumbent Carol Derr.

Neither of those spots had been filled when the Democrats held their convention last month.

For the GOP, Chairman Brent Sheldon said his committee was not able to fill the Ward 2, 3, or 6 slots on the ballot before the petition deadline.

Any Republican candidates who may decide to seek those spots would now have to run as independents. Independent petitions are due in mid-August.
