Demolition crews leveled 15 derelict vacant houses on Sweet Avenue Monday as part of Mayor Masiello's program to get rid of blighted properties in city neighborhoods.
Joining the mayor in overseeing the demolition were Fillmore District Council Member David Franczyk, representatives from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, community leaders and neighborhood residents.
"I pledged that 150 properties would be down by the end of this summer," the mayor said. "We have never before taken so many properties down as we are doing today, and the fact of the matter is, we are going to continue to take down these properties until we rid our neighborhoods of the problems which stand in the way of their -- and our -- united progress."
The mayor noted his administration has taken more deadbeat property owners to Housing Court and demolished more derelict structures than any previous administration.
