The News reported recently that the city had fired two employees for not meeting residency requirements. It has long been clear that local politicians like these requirements because it means patronage jobs for local voters.
But taxpayers like me ought to actively oppose such narrow-minded requirements.
City government, like a private business, should be run as efficiently as possible by the best people it can find, no matter where they live.
In many households, both spouses work. Should one be penalized for working in a near suburb while the other is denied employment with the city? I think not.
