Mary J. Ferrio, 76, of the City of Tonawanda, a former custodian at Tonawanda Senior High School, died Tuesday (Oct. 29, 1996) in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, North Tonawanda, after a long illness.
Born Mary J. Hicks in Sykesville, Pa., she had been a resident of Tonawanda since the age of 3. She worked for Tonawanda schools for more than 10 years, retiring in 1984.
She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, the St. Francis Mothers Club and the Home League. She was a life member of the Niagara School PTA and a member of the Degree of Pocahontas Swiftwater Council 186, the Orioles Club, the Salvation Army Golden Agers and the Tonawanda Senior Citizens.
She was active for many years in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Her husband, John A. Ferrio, died in 1964.
Surviving are two sons, Patrick of Pittsburgh and Michael of North Tonawanda; two daughters, Mary Long and Rose Smith, both of the City of Tonawanda; a brother, Lewis Hicks of Ellicottville; a sister, Cleo Schoenfeldt of the City of Tonawanda; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, 71 Adam St., City of Tonawanda. Prayers at 9 in the John O. Roth Funeral Home, Morgan and William streets, City of Tonawanda, will precede the Mass. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
