Three opponents of logging in Allegany Park received "Environmentalist of the Year" honors from the statewide Environmental Advocates group during an environmental forum held Tuesday at Buffalo State College.
Friends of Allegany leaders Bruce Kershner, Ellen Gibson and Blake Reeves were honored for their "grass-roots achievement" in the anti-logging effort that led to Gov. Pataki's announcement earlier this year banning commercial logging in the park.
A new Allegany Park Master Plan is expected to be released by the end of the year.
The governor's announcement "was another in a long line of victories for Friends of Allegany," said Val Washington, Environmental Advocates executive director.
