POWER CUT TO COLD SPRING

Power was disrupted for several hours Saturday after a dump truck driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a Niagara Mohawk utility pole, Cattaraugus County Sheriff's officials said.

Wendell R. Gates, 30, of Jamestown Street in Randolph, was driving his dump truck with a trailer attached to it west on Route 394 shortly after 10 a.m. The hitch attaching the trailer and truck broke, leaving only two safety cables to keep the truck and trailer together, sheriff's officials said.

The trailer began to swerve; Gates lost control of the vehicle; and the truck, trailer and backhoe being hauled slid off the right side of the road and overturned. The truck hit and knocked over the utility pole.

No one was injured, but Gates was charged with operating out of class and having an unregistered trailer.
