Stedman Old Farm Nurseries will celebrate National Employee Ownership Month with an open house this weekend at its three area locations.
The Newfane-based business will hold a variety of events in its headquarters at 2857 Main St., and in its stores at 9300 Transit Road in East Amherst and 4090 Southwestern Boulevard in Orchard Park. The open house will run from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Stedman established an Employee Stock Ownership Plan in 1989 with the help of New York State. At the time, former owner Richard Rybolt sold 64 percent of his stake in the nursery to his workers. Rybolt sold his remaining interest to the employees in 1994.
Stedman shares are transferred to every worker based on the hours they have worked and wages earned. Forty-six employees currently have a stake in the company and participate in its operation.
Francis Cabrel serves as general manager.
