Niagara's intercollegiate hockey program made its debut Friday night. The Purple Eagles dropped a 3-1 decision to Mercyhurst in the Blue Devil Tournament in Fredonia. Freshman Mikko Sivonen had the first goal in the school's history, with assists going to Peter DeSantis and Chris MacKenzie. Goalie Greg Gardner had 24 saves.
"We played much better than I anticipated," Eagles' coach Blaise McDonald said. "In general, we made a few freshman mistakes and it seems every one we made resulted in a goal."
In the other first-round game, Fredonia State edged Findlay (Ohio), 2-1. Brad Preston and Ron Czech had goals for the Blue Devils. The two winners play for the title today, while the losers meet in the consolation round.
MEN'S SOCCER: Howard University defeated the University at Buffalo, 4-0. The Bulls only had two shots on goal, one per half. . . . The University of Massachusetts was a 2-0 winner over visiting St. Bonaventure. Both teams had 10 shots on goal; the Bonnies dropped to 5-9-2 overall, 3-6-1 in the Atlantic 10 conference.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: The University of Detroit blanked the University at Buffalo, 4-0. The Titans recorded their 10th straight win, as UB only forced Detroit goalie Nikki Thomas to record three saves.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: UB swept past Robert Morris in three games at Alumni Arena. The Royals won for the sixth time in their last seven starts, improving to 14-13. Aprille Sweeting and Corinn Hirst had four kills each. . . . Xavier only needed three games to beat St. Bonaventure. Nikki Renninger led the Bonnies (4-18, 1-10) with 12 kills.
MEN'S SWIMMING: St. Bonaventure (153 points) was too much for Niagara (128) and Canisius (64) in a Little Three meet at Canisius.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING: St. Bonaventure (155) overpowered Niagara (125) and Canisius (53) in a Little Three meet at Canisius. St. Bonaventure's 400-yard medley relay team of Stacey Exner, Anna Belliveau, Becky Morehart and Laura Dornekott set a pool record.
