LAB TO PROBE BUS INVOLVED IN CRASH

A Blue Bird commercial bus that crashed Tuesday night on Route 17, killing the driver, will be examined at the State Police lab in Olean to determine what happened.

Wellsville troopers said the driver, George Wetherby, 68, of Olean was alone in the bus when it went off the Southern Tier Expressway about four miles west of Almond at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday.

He was pronounced dead on the scene by Coroner David P. Schwert of Alfred, who ordered an autopsy at the Monroe County medical examiner's office in Rochester.

Wetherby was driving westbound when the bus went off the road and traveled 170 yards below the shoulder, then entered adjacent woods and traveled another 50 yards before stopping.
