SYRACUSE HAILED AS U.S. COFFEE CAPITAL

Is Syracuse unseating Seattle as the nation's coffee capital?

Coffee manufacturer Maxwell House says residents of the city known for its cappuccino bars and espresso stands do not drink the most coffee in the nation -- Syracuse residents do.

The average Syracuse family gulps down a whopping 1,937 cups per year, or 5.3 cups a day, according to the coffee company.

"There's people who come in and get three and four cups. It could be," Shelby Crowley, who drinks seven to 10 cups of espresso a day, and sells 85 pounds of coffee a week at her downtown Syracuse cafe, told the Post-Standard of Syracuse.

The fact was culled from A. C. Nielsen Co. research on 1995 coffee consumption.
