NIAGARA FALLS -- With two weeks remaining in this year's fund-raising drive for the United Way of Niagara, donations and pledges have reached about 65 percent of the $1,350,000 goal.

Campaign Chairman William Berard said Tuesday that $877,350 had been raised so far in the eight-week drive. Donations benefit 19 member agencies of the United Way.

The campaign ends Nov. 6.

Parents move out on 16-year-old
LOCKPORT -- A Town of Lockport couple is being investigated for moving out of their Strauss Road home Sunday without informing their 16-year-old son who was away with friends for the weekend, Sheriff's Deputy Scott Barnes said.

Barnes said he expects to refer the matter to the district attorney's office.

Barnes was called early Monday after Kris T. Cuddihy returned home to find his parents had moved, leaving no forwarding address and no
information, deputies said.

The parents were later found living on Niagara Street.

Walkie-talkies stolen from school
LOCKPORT -- Five walkie-talkies worth $3,100 were stolen from the assistant principal's office at Lockport Senior High School sometime between Monday afternoon and late Tuesday morning, police said. Police said two recharging stations for the walkie-talkies also were stolen from the office.

FBI official faces charges
WASHINGTON -- A former top FBI official has been accused of obstructing justice in the Ruby Ridge case by allegedly destroying an internal critique of the Idaho siege and ordering a subordinate to make it appear it never existed. The accusations were leveled against E. Michael Kahoe, who helped supervise the 1992 standoff at the
cabin of white separatist Randy Weaver.

Problems with health care aired
WASHINGTON -- A Harvard University study has found that nearly 50 million Americans -- with and without health insurance -- have problems either getting medical care or paying their bills. The study also found that nearly half the nation's adults who lack health insurance have trouble obtaining or paying for medical care and suffer serious health or financial problems as a result.
