For the first time in town history, Lewiston police officers belong to a union which has the authority to negotiate a contract with town officials and expects to soon.
The union became official this month when the state Public Employment Relations Board recognized the Police Benevolent Association of Lewiston as a certified police union representing the town's two full-time and 15 part-time patrolmen, a union official said.
The union official said the association is getting ready to begin collective bargaining talks with town officials in the near future.
The association was formed when the town and village
police department's merged.
