Australian Karrie Webb, 21, was named the LPGA's Rookie of the Year. She finished second in her debut on the LPGA Tour, has won three tournaments and is closing in on Beth Daniels' single season money-winning record. She is second to Laurie Davies in Player of the Year standing.

Former champion Wilfred Benitez regained consciousness after nearly losing his seven-year battle with an inflammation of the brain. Benitez was taken to an emergency room Friday after his mother found him passed out in bed in their Puerto Rico home. Benitez is afflicted with post-traumatic encephalitis, a common condition among boxers.

Holdout forward Sean Kemp, who has not attended the first 15 days of Seattle SuperSonics training camp, has told friends that after a meeting with team owner Barry Ackerley, he will rejoin the team within the week. He isn't expected to accompany the team on a trip to Europe this weekend.
