Ellicottville Town Highway Superintendent Dave Golley said repairs to a bridge within the village limits on Elizabeth Street may begin as early as Monday, weather permitting.
Further study was ordered by Town Board members, however, to resolve a dispute between town and village officials about who is responsible for repairs and maintenance to bridges within the village.
Village Mayor John Burrell appeared at Thursday night's Town Board meeting to request that the town repair a hole in the bridge's surface.
But both Golley and Town Supervisor Rod Sergel said they do not believe the town is responsible for village bridges.
"It's the village's feeling that that structure on Elizabeth Street and the structure on Parkside Drive and the structure on Mabee Alley are town bridges," said Burrell, noting the Elizabeth Street bridge has always been maintained by the town.
In addition, Burrell said, the village should receive services in return for taxes, which pay a 25 percent share of Golley's salary and highway equipment.
Sergel said he acted on the advice of the town's lawyer who cited state highway laws.
A motion that the town maintain all village bridges in the future failed, and board members asked the town clerk to research the matter.
