CLINTON IS URGED TO VETO LOGGING BILL

Rep. Pat Williams, D-Mont., urged President Clinton on Friday to veto a bill allowing logging of national forests exempt from environmental laws, saying it threatens more than 1.5 million acres of Montana's "last remaining wild places."

The Senate on Thursday narrowly backed a plan by Sen. Slade Gorton, R-Wash., to exempt some logging from environmental laws in what supporters claimed would be an effort to ease fire threats and harvest dying trees before they rot.
