Arson was ruled the likely cause of a fire Friday at the city-owned Century Club, 6611 Buffalo Ave.
The fire started shortly before 6 p.m. in some tires and rubbish at the northeast corner of the vacant building, fire officials said. Damage was not estimated because the building is scheduled for demolition, fire officials said.
City officials purchased the building for $455,000 in 1990, with plans to construct a boat marina. However, those plans fizzled when the state withdrew a $625,000 grant to the project, headed by a private developer.
Last September the NFC Development Corp., the city's banking arm, voted to demolish the building, which was in disrepair.
