Newspapers ran more help-wanted advertisements in February than in the previous month but the improvement was localized in the west-central United States, a research group reported Thursday.

The Help-Wanted Advertising Index compiled by The Conference Board rose 5 points to 134 in February from an adjusted level of 129 a month earlier. It stood 12 points higher than its February 1994 level of 122.
