CRASH OF FALLS-BOUND PLANE FATAL TO PILOT; PASSENGER HURT

A small plane that crashed at night into a hillside near this Finger Lakes village was not found until the next morning when a dazed passenger stumbled through the woods Thursday to summon help for the badly injured pilot.

Help came too late. The 19-year-old pilot, Philip Dagasta of Hopewell Junction, Dutchess County, was airlifted to a hospital here but died several hours later of massive internal injuries.

Passenger Maria Olmoz, 21, of nearby Stormville, who was treated for hypothermia, multiple fractures and cuts and bruises, was listed in guarded condition.

The single-engine Cessna 172 left Albany on Wednesday bound for Niagara Falls and was last heard from shortly after 8 p.m. southeast of Rochester.
