A wealthy businessman shattered car and store windows with a slingshot while cruising in his Lincoln through Westbury on Thursday, Nassau County police alleged.
Gabriel Scibelli, 42, an import-export executive, was arrested in front of his Garden City home and charged with criminal mischief after a witness gave police his license plate number, according to Detective John Hanrahan.
Scibelli is accused of breaking about a dozen car and store windows along Post Avenue in Westbury between 1 and 3 a.m. Thursday.
The night clerk at the Edgewood Motel escaped injury when an inch-round stone was fired through the picture window, Hanrahan said. Also hit were the Westbury Movie Theater and a pizza parlor where customers were seated at tables.
"We usually see this kind of thing with kids," said Hanrahan.
The motive was unclear. Scibelli did not appear to be intoxicated, said Hanrahan.
The illegal, high-powered "wristrocket" slingshot, equipped with an arm brace to steady the aim, is intended to be used in hunting. "It could kill you if an object fired from it hit you in the head," said Hanrahan.
Police were looking for another man who reportedly was in the car with Scibelli, Hanrahan said.
