The Buffalo News-Buffalo State College "Books for Kids" drive is already bearing fruit.

"One day after we announced the project, with a gift of 2,000 new children's books from an anonymous donor, we got a check for $500," said Marillyn Flavin, who coordinates the effort at Buffalo State.

The "Give a Book, Touch a Life" campaign, to be an annual book drive, runs April 3-24. It asks individuals, corporations, clubs and organizations to find -- or fund -- 25,000 children's books for use in Niagara Frontier schools, churches, support groups and literacy agencies.

Books may be dropped off at any of the Buffalo and Erie County branch libraries, the Niagara Falls or Lockport libraries or at Buffalo City Hall.

Checks for tax-deductible contributions may be written to:

Buffalo State Foundation "Books for Kids" and mailed to the foundation, Room 515 Cleveland Hall, 1300 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo 14222-1095.
